C. Brewer & Co.
C. Brewer & Co.'s history spans almost the entire 19th Century and continued on into
the next. Its roots began in Honolulu in 1817 when James Hunnewell stayed a season
there to sell the stores brought out in his ship. He returned in 1826 and founded a
firm that evolved into C. Brewer & Co., one of the "Big Five" giants of Hawaiian
commerce. Brewer & Co. was a forwarder of mail and its forwarder marks are described
at Hawaii Forwarder Agent Marks.

Castle & Cooke, Honolulu
Castle & Cooke was formed by former missionaries Messrs. Samuel N. Castle and Amos
Starr Cooke in 1851 as wholesale and retail merchants. From 1858, they began investing
in sugar plantations, starting with Haiku Sugar Company. Kohala Sugar Co. became
another investment in 1862, followed by Paia Plantation, Papaikou. The firm rode the
economic boom when the Reciprocity Treaty was signed in 1876 and nearly busted in the
1879 panic and again when the McKinley tariff was imposed. Its solid footing saw it
through the hard times and it emerged as another of Hawaii's "Big 5" firms. Castle &
Cooke incorporated on December 28, 1894. A good book for further study of Castle &
Cooke is "From Land and Sea" by Frank J. Taylor, Earl M Welty and David W. Eyre,
Chronicle Books, 1976.
Eleven varieties of Castle & Cooke marks are illustrated here. Most strikes were
applied to identify company mail. However, the one mark listed by Davey,
AUXPRICOMM-C&C(circle paid)
is curious because it includes the word "PAID." This word suggests the mark was
something other than a mere merchant mark. Also, some covers from North Kohala suggest
Castle & Cooke was facilitating third party mail there. Further information on these
possibilities or about other Castle & Cooke varieties will be appreciated.

Theo H. Davies & Co., Ltd.
Theo Davies was recruited in England to join the firm of Janion, Green & Co., a
successor to Starkey, Janion & Co., formed in 1845. Davies arrived in 1857 but
returned to England in 1862, where he stayed until 1867 before returning to Honolulu to
bail out Janion. By January, 1868, Davies controlled the business and it was being
operated as Theo. H. Davies and Company. Under the laws of the Provisional Government,
it became Theo. H. Davies & Co., Ltd. in January, 1894, another of Hawaii's "Big Five"
firms.
