In 1988, Burns (see references at Describing Postal
Markings) deleted several marks identified by Davey and Bash or in one of Burns's earlier publications. The
decision to delete marks was a collaborative effort to clean up mistakes of identification or to place under one
listing all marks from the same handstamp device. When some devices wore or became clogged with ink, the appearance
of the strike gradually altered. People followed the temptation to create new listings for the changed look of the
strikes. Proliferation of multiple listings for marks from the same device created confusion when a strike met
criteria for neither or both of the listings. Burns and others made the wise choice to simplify the listing and add
a comment if the device suffered wear or accident. Since Burns's death in 1989, I have determined some additional
marks need to be DELETED. Brackets following each listing show where the
deletion took place. [Please E-mail (scott312@earthlink.net) me if you believe any of
the deleted marks should be restored.]
Here is a list of the DELETED MARKS:

|
Emeline, manuscript: I believe this is an
indication of a vessel because there was no post office of that name in the Islands.
An inter-island schooner was named Emeline [deleted by Scott 31].
Hilea type 235.01: Added by Burns, 1972; Burns
added type 253.01 in 1980; type 235.01 deleted based on the existence of double lined
circles [deleted by Burns 1988].
Hilo type 274.01: Listed by Davey/Bash but
really is a clogged strike of type 281.01 [deleted by Scott 31].
Hilo type 235.01: Listed by Davey/Bash but
really is type 253.01 based on the existence of double outer circles, giving Hilo two
styles of type 253.01 [deleted by Scott 31].
Holualoa type 235.01: Listed by Davey/Bash but
replaced by type 253.01 (added by Burns in 1980) based on the existence of double lined
circles [deleted by Burns 1988].
One style of Honokaa type 282.016: Davey/Bash
listed two styles but both are from the same device and the "thick letters 4mm high"
variety is deleted [deleted by Burns 1988].
Honokaa type 235.02: Listed by Davey/Bash but
replaced by type 253.02 (added by Burns in 1988) based on the existence of double lined
outer circles [deleted by Burns 1988].
Honokaa type 235.01: Listed by Davey/Bash but
really is type 253.01 based on the existence of double lined circles [deleted by Scott
31].
Kalapana type 235.01: Listed by Davey/Bash but
replaced by type 253.01 (added by Burns 1972) based on the existence of double lined
circles [deleted by Burns 1988].
Kawaihae type 281.046: Listed tentatively by
Burns in 1988. I examined a photocopy of the strike and believe it to be a smudged and
partial strike of Kukuihaele type 281.02 [deleted by Scott 31].
Kohala type 282.01: Burns first listed this
mark in his 1980 study. The listing was based on a partial strike which, on close
examination, was really a type 282.013 [deleted by Burns 1988].
Kohala types 235.01, 253.01 and 236.018: Davey/Bash
listed type 235.01, Burns listed type 236.018 in 1972 and added type 253.01 in 1988 but
all are replaced by type 254.018 (added by Burns, 1988) based on the existence of double
lined circles. I believe all three marks are from the same device as type 254.018
[Burns 1988 deleted 235.01 and 236.018, Scott 31 deletes 253.01].
Kukuihaele type 238.02: Added by Burns in 1972
but the partial strike I was shown (having only "UKU,") is a misidentification of
Wailuku type 238.02. The comma of Wailuku type 238.02 is longer than usual so it comes
up about mid-way on the "U" and was misinterpreted as an "I" instead of a comma
[deleted by Scott 31].
Laupahoehoe Beach type 282.02: Listed by
Davey/Bash but replaced by type 282.04 to correct an erroneous description [deleted by
Burns 1988].

but really is type 253.01 based on the existence of double lined circles [deleted by
Burns 1988].
Naalehu type 235.01: Listed by Davey/Bash but
replaced by type 253.01 (added by Burns, 1988) based on the existence of double lined
circles [deleted by Burns 1988].
Napoopoo type 235.01: Listed by Davey/Bash but
replaced by type 253.01 (added by Burns, 1988) based on the existence of double lined
circles [deleted by Burns 1988].
Olaa type 235.01: Listed by Davey/Bash but
really is type 253.01 based on the existence of double lined circles [deleted by Burns
1988].

1988].

in 1980 [deleted by Burns 1988]

1988].

with reservations but this mark represents a late and worn appearance of type 251.13
[deleted by Scott 31].

Hamoa type 235.01: Listed by Davey/Bash but this
mark is replaced by type 253.01 (added by Burns, 1980) based on the existence of double

possible 1900's "favor" mark and has never been confirmed as a valid postmark [deleted
by Scott 31].
Lahaina type 235.01: Listed by
Davey/Bash but this mark is replaced by type 253.01 (added by Scott 31) based on the
existence of double lined circles [deleted by Scott 31].

is [deleted by Scott 31].

(235.01 in 1972 and 235.02 in 1980) but they are a misdescription and clogged strikes
of type 253.02 and are replaced by type 253.02 based on the existence of double lined
circles [type 235.01 deleted by Burns 1988 and type 235.02 deleted by Scott 31].
Wailuku type 237.52: Listed by Davey/Bash as a
possible 1900's "favor" mark and has never been confirmed as a valid postmark [deleted

Honolulu type 233.14: Listed in Burns 1988 and
is supposed to have a "B" or "K" instead of the usual "A" at the bottom. I consider it
implausible [deleted by Scott 31].
Honolulu type 233.32: Listed in Burns 1988 but
noted in 1972 and is supposed to have an "O" instead of the usual "A" at the bottom.
I consider it implausible [deleted by Scott 31].
Honolulu type 233.42: Listed in Burns 1988 and
is supposed to have a blank spot instead of the usual "A" at the bottom. This type is
based upon figure 32 in MH but the postmark on the cover shown has been altered
[deleted by Scott 31].
Honolulu type 226.52: Listed by Davey/Bash but
it is misdescription of type 226.528 because the mark has dots as side ornaments
[deleted by Scott 31].
