H. Hackfeld & Co., Honolulu
This company was formed as a mercantile firm in 1849 by Capt. Henry Hackfeld and was
supported by German capital. The name H. Hackfeld & Co. was adopted in 1853. Hackfeld himself
left Hawaii in 1863 and never returned but established a world-wide enterprise under
the same name. Hackfeld became agents for Lihue Plantation, Grove Farm and Pioneer
Mill at Lahaina and financed many other plantations, securing their agencies. Hackfeld
left J. C. Pfluger and J. Bollman in charge, but in 1871, they returned to Germany,
leaving J. C. Glade and Ed. Fursteneau running the business to tough through the lean
years of 1871-1876. Paul Isenberg, H. F. Glade and J. F. Hackfeld arrived from Bremen
in 1881 and took up the reins of the Hawaiian arm of the business. In 1890, it entered
the guano business, buying Laysan Island. The Hawaiian part of the company was
incorporated in 1897 and grew to become another of Hawaii's "Big Five." The firm's
assets were seized in World War I and it was succeeded by American Factors in 1918. H.
Hackfeld & Co. also was known for its forwarding mark (see
Hawaii Forwarder Agent Marks).

J. M. Oat, Jr., Honolulu
Oat ran a stationery store and newspaper company in Honolulu during the 1880's. His
firm is to be distinguished from J. M. Oat & Co., his father's sail making business.
The junior Oat's close connection with the postal service began in the 1870's when he
was hired as a clerk in the office. After that stint, his business interrelated with
postal affairs. In 1893, Oat was appointed Postmaster General of Hawaii to fill the
shoes of ailing Walter Hill in the aftermath of the 1893 revolution. Oat remained in
that job through the remainder of Hawaii's independent postal system and then was
appointed postmaster of Honolulu. Oat also forwarded mail and used a mark for that
purpose (see Hawaii Forwarder Agent Marks).
