"PAID ALL" MARKS
Mahoney shows eight varieties of PAID ALL marks in
his Appendix 4 and lumps most of them together as type 22, ranging in size from 24mm
circles to 27mm circles. One other style is separated as type 49. Usage of these
marks began in 1868. Williams shows these marks as types SAF 690, 700, 710, 720, 1760,
1770, 1800 and 1810 (again arriving at the same number of varieties as Mahoney but the
tracings show some differences).

Mahoney type 22 (see his Appendix 4 for the various "PAID ALL" marks he includes as
type 22)
Williams type SAF 690
24mm: red, magenta
Usage: September 11, 1868 to May 8, 1871
The month and day dates in these marks are different, with the May 8, 1871 coming
nearest to Williams's type 690. The layout of San Francisco also is different, with
the "O" pointing directly at the "S" in the October 18 mark, but pointing below the "S"
in the other two marks. The two marks with earlier dates fit none of Williams's
tracings but the closeness of the lettering in "SAN FRANCISCO" is close to type 690.
Space between "S" and "C" = 4mm.

"PD. ALL" MARKS
Mahoney identifies six varieties of markings with "PD. ALL" at the bottom, collects
them in Appendix 3 and lumps them together as type 30. Two of the six lack a period
after "PD." Williams gives us five varieties listed as types 1730 (no period), 1740,
1750, 1780 and 1790 (no period). All of these marks are in the range of 26-27mm and
their use was from March, 1879 to November, 1891.

Mahoney type 30 (see his Appendix 3 for the various PD. ALL marks he includes as type 30)
Williams type SAF 1730
26.5mm; red
Usage: March 15, 1879 to March 10, 1884
Both Mahoney and Williams show this mark without a period after "PD." Both authors
have confused several of these styles. Note on this style, the second "L" points to
the "N." Space between "S" and "C" = 2mm.

|
April 11, 1881
|
Mahoney type 30 (see his Appendix 3 for the various PD. ALL marks he includes as type 30)
Williams type SAF 1740
26mm; red
Usage: May 14, 1880 to July 31, 1881
This mark has four horizontal lines between the month and the day, but they
sometimes fail to show a strong print. Mahoney and Williams trace it with a period but
the April 11, 1881 example appears to lack a period. The second "L" points between the
"R" and the "A." Space between "S" and "C" = 2mm.

June 4, 1881
|
Mahoney Appendix 3, type 30
Williams type SAF 1780 (unrecorded)
25.5mm; red
Usage: June 4, 1881 (Williams gives June 22, 1888 to December 2, 1889 for his type 1780)
Neither Williams nor Mahoney show a style where the second "L" points between the
"A" and the "N" but Williams's tracing for type 1780 comes closest. Space between "S"
and "C" = 2mm.

|
Mahoney Appendix 3, type 30
Williams type SAF 1750
27mm; red
Usage: January 25, 1882 to November 24, 1891
The January 25, 1882 mark is over a year earlier than the usage period used by both
Williams and Mahoney. Note the second "L" points between the "R" and the "A." In some
strikes there seems to be a wider gap between the month and the day. Space between "S"
and "C" = 1mm. on Williams's type 1750 but the marks shown to the left vary up to a gap
of 2mm.
