Back to Fifth Sub-Period of the Late Treaty Period.

|
Originating at Hilo on the island of Hawaii in 1866, this letter was franked with a 5¢ "Hawaiian Islands" Numeral (Scott No. 21), to pay Hawaiian postage,
a 2¢ United States "Black Jack" stamp to pay the ship fee, and a 3¢ United States 1861 Washington stamp to pay the United States letter rate from San
Francisco to New York. The cover was postmarked at Hilo on May 31, at Honolulu on June 16, and at San Francisco on July 7. From Honolulu, it was taken to
San Francisco on the American bark Behring, sailing June 16, 1866, and arriving July 6. From San Francisco, the letter was sent East on the overland mail
route via Salt Lake City. (ex Gibson, Harris)
