A cover sent from the Hawaiian Consulate at Gibraltar to Berlin, dated March 26, 1895
at Gibraltar. The cover bears a strike of the official mark used at the Gibraltar
Consulate, AUXOFF-Gibraltar(crown).
Two principal categories comprise the official auxiliary marks:
- those used by various offices of the Hawaiian government
either at home or
abroad;
- those used by foreign consular offices located in Hawaii.
Seals and labels are admitted into the listing of official marks along with handstamps.

The date often is missing. I measure the mark at 32mm rather than 34mm as given by Davey.
This mark was used to cancel stamps to order (i.e., as a way to cancel stamps sold to
speculators). It was also used as a marking on official mail of the foreign office and
on a few soldier letters. When found on a stamp, it is presumed to be a c-t-o.

Consular Offices Abroad, Department of Foreign Affairs
Hawaii maintained consular offices in various countries. In 1888, the countries with
Hawaiian consulates were the United States (Washington, D. C., New York, San Francisco,
Boston, Portland, Oregon and Port Townsend, Washington), Mexico, Guatemala, Panama,
Peru, Chile (two offices), Paraguay, Uruguay, Great Britain (fourteen offices), Canada
(twelve offices), Australian Colonies (five offices), New Zealand (two offices), Hong
Kong, Shanghai, Singapore, Gibraltar, Tahiti, France (five offices), Germany (five
offices), Spain (six offices), Canary Islands, Azores, Cape Verde Islands, Portugal
(four offices), Italy (five offices), Holland (two offices), Belgium (four offices),
Sweden (two offices), Norway (two offices), Denmark, Japan (two offices), Siam and
Jaluit (Marshall Islands). The number of locations increased over the years. At least
two offices had handstamps: Gibraltar and Spain. Two marks are recorded from
Gibraltar and one from Spain.

Post Office, Department of the Interior
Marks used by the General Post Office appeared sometimes on official mail originating
at the post office. References to ordering a "Post Office stamp" show up in the post
office account journals. These entries cause excitement for those seeking information
about the postmarks but, alas, the entries are to the official marks. I doubt the
following four marks will complete the list.

postmarks suggests it may have served as a Honolulu postmark.

FOREIGN CONSULAR OFFICES IN HAWAII
Several countries had diplomats accredited to Hawaii. In 1888, those countries were
the United States, Great Britain, France, Portugal and Japan. Numerous countries had
consulate offices in Hawaii. In 1888, those countries were: the United States
(offices at Honolulu, Hilo, Kahului and Mahukona), Italy, the German Empire, Sweden and
Norway, Denmark, Peru, Belgium, Netherlands, Spain, Austro-Hungary, Russia, Great
Britain, Mexico, Japan and China. I have noted handstamps used on mail originating
from several of the diplomatic or consular offices in Hawaii. Here are some examples
of foreign consular marks originating on mail in Hawaii.
