A 4¢ UPSS7 postal envelope with a 1¢ green Scott No. 42 stamped with the rare
"CANCELLED." - AUXRR-KAH(10mm Unserifed) -
associated with the Kahului Railroad. It was mailed August 22, 1890, at Wailuku, Maui,
carried from Wailuku on the Kahului Railroad where it was loaded on an inter-island
steamer for Honolulu and then carried by steamer to Port Townsend, Washington, via San
Francisco. Why some letters received this mark and others did not is unclear.
Transportation marks are ship marks or
railroad marks. To be included, the marking needs
to bear the name of a ship used to carry a letter (thus excluding ships' names in
addresses or to show the origin of the letter) or a mark used in conjunction with
shipping or railroad mail carrying duties. Handstamped markings are the most popular
to collect. Particularly with ship marks, there also is a myriad of manuscript
markings. All markings designating a transportation choice, both manuscript and
handstamped, qualify for inclusion.
SHIP MARKS
RAILROAD MARKS
Three railroads operated as public carriers in Hawaii in the 19th Century: the Hawaiian
Railroad in the North Kohala District of Hawaii, the Kahului Railroad on Maui and the
Oahu Railroad on Oahu. All three railroads carried mail. Numerous other private
railroads operated on plantations throughout the country. At least one, the Waimea
and Kahuku road on Kauai, carried mail. Marks are known from two of the three public
carriers: The Oahu Railroad and the Kahului Railroad. No marks are known from the
plantation railroads.

Similar crayon marks found on postage stamps of the Bank Note Issue, Provisional

Oahu Railroad Company marks:
Three of these marks were recorded by Davey. Ed Burns added the Pearl City mark. A
second Honolulu mark has come to light, making the total five marks. Measurements and the full wording are
still suspect. One strike of the Pearl City mark is known on cover and is the only known strike on cover for any
of these marks.

Overland Mail Routes,
Island of Oahu Routes and
